Looking at Contemporary Japanese Society through the pen of Women

 

Aim of the course

As the title of this course suggests, this course looks into the various aspects of Japanese society through the eyes of a very important section of the society- Women. Throughout the history of Japanese literature women authors have been a very important contributor. But as it is beyond the scope of this course to look into all the periods we restrict ourselves to the contemporary period and aim to go through some of such works in Japanese literature.

Level of the Language of the Aspiring Students

In this course at the outset we will study about the emergence of women in the history of Japanese literature, both in Japanese as well as English languages. But the works to be read in class will only be in Japanese language. Thus the aspirants of this course should have a minimum of N3Level of Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)

 

Outline of the course

Starting with an outline of the history of Japanese literature with special reference to the women authors, we will go through some of such works in different periods. Selecting three women authors of contemporary period, we go through their lives and works and then read and analyse one work of each of these three authors.

Dates: March 5th 12th 19th and April 2nd  9th 16th 23rd 30th   (Saturdays)

Time: 10:30am ~ 12:30pm

* The works written in the schedule may be changed depending upon the availability of the work.

Certification:

Certificates will be provided on completing the course. There are 2 criteria- first, you have to pass the final test and second, the attendance should be 70% or above.

– Due to class size, telephonic interview will be conducted between Feb 20th, 2016 and Feb 26th, 2016.

– Those who are selected shall come and pay the material fee at the Japan Foundation by 5th March (first class) to finalise the registration.
