The Japan Foundation Library
Objective
The Japan Foundation was established by the Japanese Government for the purpose of promoting mutual understanding and friendship through international cultural exchange.
The Library of the Japan Foundation New Delhi is open to the public and its extensive collection covers materials on Japan written in various languages. It also has the latest Japanese magazines and newspapers.
Library opening hours:
Tuesday to Saturday - 11.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.
Closed days:
- Sunday, Monday and Japan Foundation New Delhi holidays.

Membership
- In order to get the service of a member, one has to have a membership card. Membership is open only to residents of Delhi NCR (National Capital Region), with identification and valid proof of address (voterfs card, driving license, passport or a student identity card). You will need to provide the library with Identity card, residential address proof, security deposit and two passport size (3cm X 2.5cm) color photograph while applying for the membership.
- After completing the membership formalities as stated above and deposit of security money, member shall be issued the membership cards, which allow users immediate use of library services. All the members shall abide by the rules and regulations laid down by the Library of the Japan Foundation New Delhi.
- Library of the Japan Foundation New Delhi offers only individual membership for free of cost (But with the refundable security deposit).
- The duration of the membership is one year. Member has to renew his/her membership at the end of each financial year i.e. 31st March.
- Member has to deposit the security deposit according to his/her category, which is as follows:

Note
1. General public can use the library without membership, but providing services such as borrowing facility, use of computer and audio-visual material etc. is available for the bonafide members only.
2. The person has to show his/her proof that he/she is teaching Japanese Language at school/institution if he/she wants to get the membership for Japanese Language Teacherfs category. Person who teaches Japanese Language only for privately is not eligible for this category.
3. The security deposit money will be deposited by Cash only.
4. The security deposit shall be refunded at the time of cancellation of membership only.
5. Besides security deposit, Rs.10 will be charged for the membership card.
Service for the member:
Borrowing Books:
1. Member for Individual A can borrow up to two books for 14 (fourteen) days only at a time.
2. Member for Japanese Language Teacher can borrow up to three books for the 14 (fourteen) days only at a time.
3. Reference books in the reference shelves (For Reference books, RR has been written in the spine level of the Books) and the latest magazines/ newspaper, CDs/DVD, Tape Cassette can not be borrowed.
4. The borrower of the library must return the books within the due date. In case of default, a fine of Rs.10 /- will be charged per day up to thirty (30) days from the due date, and after thirty (30) days, the whole security deposit shall be forfeited as penalty/fine.
Reservation of Library Books:
A member for Individual A and Japanese Language Teacher may reserve one book at a time by registering the details of the required titles in the reservation form available at the library counter.
- If anybody wishes to borrow the document/ books which are out on loan, one can reserve it. Its availability will be informed via e-mail or telephone. Reserved books will be kept at the counter for a period of 4 days from the date it became available. If one does not appear to pick it up within that period, it will be returned to the shelf.
Extension of borrowing period:
Member can extend the borrowing period of borrowed books up to another 14 days. This procedure has to be made in person at the counter. Extension is approved only if the book is not reserved by others.
Use of Computer and Audio-visual Material(DVD, Audio-casette and Video-casette):
Member can access a selection of web sites and reference CD-ROMs.
- Downloading of Images or file are not allowed.
- Use of any external storage media are not allowed.
- Browsing objectionable sites are not allowed.
- Copying of any kind of information from the web and saving it on the hard disk is not allowed.
- For Internet use, using the email and chatting tools are not allowed.
Photocopying :
Photocopying facilities are available @ Re.1/- per A4 size exposure. Photocopy is subject to copyright restrictions. Request may be addressed to the Librarian (delivery time: maximum 24 hours).
Loss/ Damage of Library Books:
Users are responsible for the material borrowed and will be required to reimburse the loss or damage of the books. Any books lost, spoilt or scribbled inside will have to be replaced by paying the price of the book plus 30% towards shipment charges. One should report the loss/damage of the material in using the designated form available at the library counter.
Loss of Membership Card:
In order to prevent any misuse, loss of membership card must be reported immediately in writing to the librarian in a prescribed form available at the library counter. A new card shall be issued on payment of Rs.10/- after one week from the date of loss has been reported. In case the user does not report the loss of membership card to the librarian, the library shall not be responsible for issuing the books on the lost card and the card holder shall hold responsible of reimbursing the cost of the books borrowed with his/her lost card.
Change of Address:
Any change of address/ telephone/e-mail should be notified to the librarian immediately.
Classification:
Books have been arranged alphabetically according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System, which is divided into 10 major categories. The classification number is given to each book in the spine level of the books.
How to Search Library Materials:
Computer search is available for finding materials. Parts of the material are shelved in the closed stacks. Please consult with the library staff in order to use them. For using audio/visual materials, microfilms, microfiches and rare books, please consult the library staff.
Reference Services:
The library provides reference services for the collection and research information related to Japan and international cultural exchange. Requests are accepted by telephone, fax and e-mail.
General Instruction:
- The library is open to all. Consultation of books /reference in the library is free of cost but services such as borrowing the books is reserved to library members only.
- Please present your valid ID card or Library Membership Card upon entering Library.
- The users will deposit their personal belongings at the property counter against a token.
- In case the property counter token is lost, the deposited article may be claimed with proper identification after producing a written request.
- Eatable and drinks are not allowed inside the library.
- Cell phone must be switched off before entering the library.
- Damage to, or unauthorized removal of materials constitute a serious offence and may lead to a fine or disciplinary action.
- After using the books, please return the books to eBook Return Cornerf.
- Underlining, writing inside the books or tearing pages are not allowed. Anybody found damaging library books shall have to pay the price of the book plus 30% towards shipment charges and debarred from future entry to the library.
- Displaying any poster or putting any publicity Boucher is not allowed without the permission of Librarian.
- In case of any misdemeanor, the Director of the Japan Foundation or the library staff is authorized to evict the concerned person.
- Please maintain a quiet atmosphere in the library.
- Personal computer or laptop is not allowed in the library.
- Library cards are not transferable.
