*Japanese language has got three different scripts, called Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. It can also be written in roman letters. In this text we are introducing Japanese through roman letters. However, to assist the student in the pronunciation of different syllables, we have provided the Devnagari equivalent too. The Hiragana has also been provided.

In order to produce ‘n’ sound, we sometimes use the ‘m’ alphabet and at other times we use ‘n’ alphabet. Generally, when ‘n’ sound is used before consonants like ‘p’, ‘b’. ‘m’, then we write it as ‘m’, and at all other times, we write it as ‘n’. Some examples have been given above.




Let Us Pronounce These Words

Japanese Language has long sounds and double consonant sounds. A long sound is a prolonged sound of a vowel or a consonant, and in a double consonant sound, we do give more stress on a particular sound. Double consonant sound is like the or sound in Hindi. Let us give some examples below. While writing a long sound, we generally repeat the same vowel used in the alphabet. Similarly, for a double consonant sound, we repeat the consonant that is to be stressed. However, while pronouncing the words, we have to give equal emphasis to each of the syllables used in the word. Let us practice the following long and double consonant sounds.
